As we at Reuniting of African Descendants kick off our new year, we reflect on all the beautiful things we accomplished in 2020. We are truly thankful for all your help and support; none of this would have been possible without you. Take a look below to see how R.O.A.D created positive change in our community in 2020, and discover new ways to make an impact with us in 2021!
Some highlights from R.O.A.D's work in 2020...
💫We distributed over $5,000 in mutual aid to Black Trans and Queer people in the U.S. through our Hope and Healing partnership with Black Trans Femmes in the Arts.
💫Through our partnership with The Mahogany Project, we provided community and exposure for 9 Black Queer, Trans, and Non-Binary artists through our Artivism Program, including commissioning works of art and launching our FREE Printable Trans & Queer adult coloring book.
💫We hosted a 3-Day retreat on Shinnecock/Montauk land for 6 Black Trans and Non-Binary healers, with activities led by Elder Imani Rashid of The Imani Rashid Healing Center. Special Thank you to our sponsor Monique Melton!
💫Through our COVID-19 Global Mutual Aid Fund, R.O.A.D provided over $5,000 to 22 Black Trans and Non-Binary people in Uganda, Kenya, and The Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as Jamaican asylum seekers in Europe, allowing them to access shelter, HIV medication, food, and other life saving essential needs.
💫Through our HRT Fund, R.O.A.D has provided over $5,000 (so far) to East African activists seeking Hormone Replacement Therapy and other gender-transition materials. We still have $9,000 to raise to meet our goal of $14,000. Special Thank You to For The Gworls, Black Trans Femmes in the Art, Black Trans Travel Fund, The Black Excellence Collective, Trans Housing Coalition & many more.
💫In September 2020, in collaboration with Trans Positives Uganda, R.O.A.D covered the down payment to secure 1/2 an acre of land in Uganda for 9,201,217.50 Ugandan Shillings ($2,500 USD). In December 2020, our Ugandan partners began construction on a community living facility that will house Black Trans sex workers. The facility will provide shelter and agricultural space to Black Trans sex workers living with HIV, and ultimately the entire community. This remains an ongoing project that still requires funding.
💫In November and December 2020, R.O.A.D provided over USD 1,000 (the equivalent of 3,680,487 Ugandan Shillings) to bail Black Trans people in East Africa out of jails and detention centers. These siblings were detained as a result of anti-LGBTQ laws in Kenya and Uganda.
